Failed Back Surgery Q & A

What is failed back surgery?

Failed back surgery occurs when a patient undergoes back surgery without a successful result. After the patient has recovered from the surgery, they continue to experience pain, weakness, numbness, or other symptoms that were present before the procedure. In many cases, the structural problem believed to be the cause of the pain was successfully repaired, but the patient continues to experience these problems anyway.

What causes failed back surgery?

Failed back surgery can occur for several different reasons. For example, even if the surgeon was able to repair the problem causing the patient’s pain, the patient may continue to experience pain or weakness because of the damage done to the nerves and other structures before the surgery. In other cases, the patient may continue to experience problems because the problem repaired wasn’t the true cause of the patient’s pain.

How can chiropractic care help?

Chiropractic care addresses the underlying issues that cause the patient’s pain. Depending on the situation, the issue may be inflammation, pinched nerves, weak muscles, or problems with alignment. In some cases, the patient may have pain related to 2 or more of these issues. Once these underlying issues are addressed, the patient’s symptoms will improve.

How does Advanced Back & Neck Pain Center approach the treatment of patients with failed back surgery?

When a patient comes in after a failed back surgery, the chiropractor begins by evaluating the patient thoroughly to identify the source of the pain. Once the chiropractor understands the cause of the patient’s pain, they can develop a customized treatment plan designed to address each of the patient’s issues and improve their symptoms.

Depending on the patient’s needs, Advanced Back & Neck Pain Center may recommend physical therapy, massage therapy, and/or chiropractic care. In many cases, the patient’s treatment plan will include a combination of these therapies. The goal of treatment is to improve the patient’s symptoms while also building up the strength and stability of the entire back. When the back is stronger and more stable, the patient will be less likely to experience new problems in the future.
